SAP S/4HANA Cloud review
Global, product-led enterprises needing the deepest operational functionality available.
Overview
SAP S/4HANA Cloud is the reference system for running a large product business: manufacturing, logistics, procurement and finance in one in-memory platform, with industry solutions hardened across automotive, consumer goods, life sciences and more. The RISE with SAP programme has made cloud adoption more structured, and embedded analytics genuinely benefit from HANA performance. The costs are equally famous: premium licensing, partner-led implementations measured in months to years, and a skills market that charges accordingly. At the complexity ceiling, nothing else goes as deep — below it, a great deal of money buys a great deal of unused depth.
Strengths and weaknesses
What we like
- Deepest manufacturing and supply-chain functionality in the market
- Industry solutions hardened over decades
- In-memory analytics are genuinely fast at scale
- Unmatched global localisation and compliance coverage
- Enormous partner, app and talent ecosystem
What to watch
- Premium TCO — licence, partner and internal team costs all run high
- Implementations are long and governance-intensive
- Clean-core discipline restricts casual customisation
- Fiori UX much improved but still weighty for casual users

Who SAP S/4HANA Cloud is for — and who should skip it
Best for
Multinational manufacturers and distributors, regulated industries, and enterprises whose operational complexity justifies the deepest platform.
Probably not for
Mid-market companies under roughly £200m turnover (start with Business Central or NetSuite-class options) and anyone without budget for a serious implementation.
Our verdict — 8.7/10
SAP S/4HANA Cloud earns its premium exactly where physical operations are the business — plants, warehouses, complex supply chains. Everyone else is buying depth they will never touch.
