How to choose operations & supply chain software
ERP decisions are decade-long commitments with seven-figure blast radii. This guide is the order of operations we recommend before any vendor demo.
1. Map processes and maturity before vendors
Document your core flows — order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, plan-to-produce — and grade your own maturity honestly. Organisations consistently buy software for the process they wish they had; the successful ones buy for the process they can realistically maintain in 24 months.
2. Decide suite versus best-of-breed explicitly
A unified suite (SAP, Oracle, Dynamics) trades peak functionality in each area for integration and one throat to choke. Best-of-breed (Coupa and friends) trades integration effort for excellence in a specific domain. Neither is universally right — but failing to choose deliberately is universally expensive.
3. Budget the implementation, not the licence
Plan on implementation services costing one to three times licence fees, plus your own people's time in large quantities. Evaluate partners as rigorously as vendors: named consultants, references in your industry, and a realistic plan with your team's capacity accounted for.
4. Interrogate data and integration early
ERP projects fail on master data and interface spaghetti more than on software. Inventory your systems, decide the integration architecture (middleware, iPaaS, point-to-point), and start cleansing product, customer and supplier data before contracts are signed.
5. Weight vendor viability and roadmap
You are buying a ten-year relationship. Assess the vendor's investment in your industry, cloud roadmap credibility, and the health of its partner ecosystem in your region. A smaller vendor with momentum often beats a giant's legacy product on care and feeding.
