Overview

BrightPay is the quiet favourite of UK and Irish payroll professionals: HMRC- and Revenue-recognised, bureau-grade multi-employer management, auto-enrolment, CIS and statutory scenarios handled with unusual thoroughness — all at annual-licence prices that undercut monthly per-employee models substantially at volume. The cloud version and BrightPay Connect add employee self-service, backup and remote access to the desktop core. Its limits are geographic and structural: UK and Ireland only, no native ledger (journals export to Xero, Sage and QuickBooks), and HR features are intentionally light. For bureaus especially, it is close to the perfect tool.

Strengths and weaknesses

What we like

  • The bureau choice: many employers, one licence structure
  • Deep payroll-specific features — CIS, complex statutory scenarios
  • HMRC and Irish Revenue recognised; auto-enrolment built in
  • Annual licensing is outstanding value at volume
  • Consistently praised, human support

What to watch

  • UK and Ireland only
  • Desktop heritage — cloud edition narrower than web-native rivals
  • No native ledger; journals exported to accounting software
  • HR features deliberately minimal

Who BrightPay is for — and who should skip it

Best for

Accountants and bureaus processing many payrolls, and small UK/IE employers wanting depth without monthly per-head pricing.

Probably not for

Multi-country employers (ADP), cloud-purists, and teams wanting HR-suite features bundled in.

Our verdict — 8.2/10

BrightPay is the payroll professional's tool and the bureau category's benchmark: unglamorous, deep and extraordinarily good value.
