Head-to-head verdicts on the field-service platforms UK buyers actually shortlist — with the traps flagged: hardware-bundled pricing, multi-year contracts, quote-only vendors and North-American tools that do not know what a Gas Safe certificate is.

The three tribes of field-service software
The category splits by operational shape. Fleet-led reactive service (plumbing, drainage, plant, logistics) belongs with BigChange — scheduling plus vehicle tracking plus payments in one subscription. Compliance-led trades (gas, heating, fire and security) gravitate to Commusoft for its certificate workflows. Project-led contractors (M&E installs, fit-out) lean simPRO for estimating and deep job costing. Small domestic teams can live happily in Jobber or ServiceM8. Choose the tribe first; the feature matrix polices itself.
Hardware in the box changes the maths
Published UK pricing runs from roughly £25–£29 per user per month at the software-only small-business end (ServiceM8, Workever) to £34–£45 where fuller compliance and contract management live (Tradify, Joblogic) — then jumps to £79.95+ per licence where hardware is bundled in, as with BigChange. Neither is dishonest; they are different products. But compare like with like: if you already pay another provider for vehicle tracking, a bundled deal may duplicate it.
Consolidation means your vendor has a parent
This market is consolidating fast. simPRO Group acquired BigChange in October 2024; simPRO itself is backed by K1 Investment Management; ServiceTitan is private-equity fuelled. Ownership is not inherently bad — BigChange kept its Leeds DNA and product — but it changes roadmap risk. When two sibling platforms overlap, ask both vendors how the products coexist before you sign a multi-year deal.
